What we collect when you use this site, why, and what we do with it.

Privacy notice

Draft — not yet approved. The technical facts below were established by auditing what the site actually requests and stores, so they are accurate. The commercial details are marked like this and need the hostel to supply them. Have it read by someone qualified before it goes live.

Who we are

Hutt Backpackers, 30 Downs Road, Newcastle, Co. Down, BT33 0AG, Northern Ireland. We are the data controller for the information described here. You can reach us at [email protected] or +44 (0)28 4372 2133.

Registered company name and number: to confirm. ICO registration number: to confirm — check whether registration is required.

What we collect, and when

If you send an enquiry

The enquiry form asks for your name and email address, and optionally your phone number, the number of people, your arrival and departure dates, the type of group you are, and anything else you choose to tell us in the message box. We ask for these because we cannot answer an availability question without them.

Lawful basis: taking steps at your request before entering into a contract (UK GDPR Article 6(1)(b)). Where an enquiry does not lead to a booking, we rely on our legitimate interests in responding to people who contact us (Article 6(1)(f)).

Who else sees it: the form is delivered by Forminit, a UK-registered form-processing service, who process it on our behalf under a data processing agreement. Forminit's stated data residency is within AWS's Ireland region (EU). We do not sell or share enquiry details with anyone else.

How long we keep it: to confirm — a common approach is to keep enquiries that did not become bookings for 12 months, and booking records for as long as accounting rules require.

Payment details: We do not ask for card details through the enquiry form, and we do not store payment card details anywhere on our systems.

If you just read the site

We run no analytics. There is no tracking pixel, no advertising network, and no profiling. We do not know who you are or that you visited.

One other company does receive your IP address, because your browser has to ask them for something in order to display the page:

  • Open-Meteo (api.open-meteo.com) — supplies the live weather for Newcastle and for the Mourne tops. Your browser asks them directly, so they receive your IP address. We send them nothing about you; the request only says which two locations to report on, and those are the same for every visitor.

The two typefaces the site is set in (Fraunces and Archivo) are hosted on our own server, not Google's, so no request for them leaves your browser bound for anywhere but us.

Your web host will also keep server logs in the ordinary way. Name the host and their log retention once hosting is decided.

Cookies and storage on your device

This site sets no cookies at all. It does keep three small values in your own browser, which never leave your device and are never sent to us. They are described in full in the cookie and storage notice.

Your rights

Under UK data protection law you can ask us to give you a copy of the information we hold about you, correct it if it is wrong, delete it, restrict what we do with it, or object to us using it. Where you have given consent you can withdraw it at any time. Email [email protected] and we will respond within one month.

If you think we have handled your information badly, please tell us first so we can put it right. You also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk or on 0303 123 1113.

Changes

If we change how we handle your information we will update this page and change the date at the top.
